Since Dublin Airport opened its doors 85 years ago, the dedicated team has worked tirelessly to offer great service to passengers. A massive thank you to all employees who have been the driving force behind this success and to the hundreds of millions of passengers who have supported Dublin Airport since 1940. From humble beginnings at Collinstown to becoming an international hub, Dublin Airport has connected Ireland to the world. There have been many historical moments at Dublin Airport-  below are some of these from the last 85 years.

1940: COLLINSTOWN AIRPORT OPENS ITS DOORS ON JANUARY 19 1940

Dublin, January 19, 1940 - In a momentous event, Collinstown Airport, now known as Dublin Airport, commenced operations today with a modest flight to Liverpool, marking the beginning of its illustrious journey. Over the past 85 years, this once humble airfield has transformed into a bustling international hub, now handling over 30 million passengers annually. Dublin Airport has become a vital gateway, connecting Ireland to the world and facilitating international trade. It has witnessed significant visits from US Presidents, Popes, and global superstars like The Beatles and Taylor Swift.

1942: PASSENGER NUMBERS SOAR TO 10,000

Dublin, December 31, 1942 - In a remarkable achievement, Collinstown Airport has seen a significant increase in passenger numbers, reaching an impressive 10,000 this year. This milestone marks a pivotal moment in the airport's history, reflecting its growing importance as a key transportation hub. The surge in passengers underscores the airport's vital role in connecting Ireland to the world and facilitating travel during these challenging times.

1963: PRESIDENT JOHN F. KENNEDY TOUCHES DOWN IN DUBLIN

Dublin, June 26, 1963 - President John F. Kennedy arrived at Dublin Airport today, greeted by An Taoiseach and the President of Ireland. This historic visit marks the first time a serving US President has visited Ireland. President Kennedy's visit was part of a broader European tour and was seen as a homecoming, reconnecting with his ancestral roots. 

1963: DAY TRIPPERS: THE BEATLES LAND IN DUBLIN

Dublin, November 7, 1963 - Beatlemania swept through Dublin today as The Beatles landed at Dublin Airport. The iconic band played two electrifying gigs at the Adelphi Cinema on Middle Abbey Street, sending the city into a frenzy. Over 200 Gardaí were on duty to control the ecstatic crowds.

1968: SPACE AGE DESIGN FOR NEW PIER AT TERMINAL 1

Dublin Airport reveals futuristic, space age design for a new pier at Terminal 1, promising a modern and innovative travel experience. This architectural marvel is set to redefine air travel, reflecting the era's bold vision and technological advancements.

1979: PONTIFF’S PLANE MET BY THOUSANDS AT TERMINAL

Dublin, September 29, 1979 - Pope John Paul II made history today as he landed at Dublin Airport for a three-day visit, the first by any Pope to Ireland. The Pontiff kissed the ground upon disembarking and was greeted by the President of Ireland. He then flew by helicopter to Phoenix Park, where he celebrated Mass for 1.25 million people. Over 2.5 million attended events across Dublin, Drogheda, Clonmacnoise, Galway, Knock, Limerick, and Maynooth.

1990: THE RETURN OF THE IRISH SQUAD FROM ITALIA ’90 WORLD CUP IS CELEBRATED IN STYLE AT DUBLIN AIRPORT

Dublin, July 1, 1990 - The Irish soccer team received a hero's welcome as they arrived at Dublin Airport following their participation in the Italia ’90 World Cup. An estimated 50,000 people gathered at the airport, and 500,000 more took to the streets of Dublin to celebrate this historic achievement.

2012: KATIE TAYLOR TOUCHES DOWN AFTER WINNING GOLD FOR IRELAND

Dublin, August 13, 2012 - Olympic gold medallist Katie Taylor returned home to a hero's welcome today. The flag bearer for the Irish Olympic team proudly flew the Tricolour as her plane landed at Dublin Airport, where she was greeted by cheering crowds.
